From Noida to Barcelona: how a container of denim actually ships

From Noida to Barcelona: how a container of denim actually ships

Buyers see two dates: the ex-factory date and the day the goods reach their warehouse. Everything in between is our job. Here is what happens to 3,200 denim jackets in 80 cartons between Sector 6, Noida and a distribution centre outside Barcelona.

Day 0 — Final inspection and packing

Our QC team completes the AQL 2.5 final inspection (a sample of 200 pieces for this lot size, maximum 10 major defects) and photographs the results into your order timeline. Goods are folded to your spec, poly-bagged, and packed by size ratio into export cartons with your markings. A packing list is generated from the carton scan — no retyping.

Day 1 — Documents begin

Commercial invoice, packing list, shipping bill, certificate of origin (from the Chamber or under the EU GSP scheme where eligible), GOTS transaction certificate if applicable, and the buyer-specific forms — often a declaration of conformity and an EU REACH statement. Our CHA (customs house agent) receives the draft set the same day.

Day 2–3 — Trucking to the port

Noida is landlocked. Cartons travel by truck to an inland container depot (ICD) at Tughlakabad or Dadri, or directly 1,400 km to Mundra in Gujarat, our preferred port for Europe. Direct trucking adds a day but saves a rail transfer.

Day 4–6 — Customs and stuffing

Shipping bill filed, goods examined (or RMS-cleared), container stuffed and sealed. The one thing that goes wrong every time: a carton count or weight that does not match the packing list. Our fix since 2023 is to weigh every carton at the factory and print the weight on the label.

Day 7 — On board

Vessel departs Mundra. Bill of lading issued. If you pay by LC, this is the day we present documents to the bank — clean documents mean payment in a week; one discrepancy means fees and a fortnight.

Day 7–31 — At sea

Mundra to Barcelona via the Suez Canal is 22–26 days on a direct service; transhipment routes add 5–7 days. We send you the tracking link and an ETA update every Friday.

Day 32–34 — Arrival and clearance

Your forwarder (or ours, on DDP terms) clears EU customs using the commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin. Duties on cotton garments from India into the EU are typically 12%, reduced under GSP where the rules of origin are met — which is why the certificate of origin matters.

Day 35 — Delivered

Trucked to your warehouse. We ask for a receiving report with photos of any damaged cartons within 7 days; claims are settled against the insurance we arranged at Day 6.

The three decisions that change your landed cost

  • Incoterm. FOB gives you control of freight; DDP gives you one price and no surprises. We quote both.
  • Port. Mundra is fastest to Europe; Nhava Sheva (Mumbai) has more sailings. For the US East Coast, Nhava Sheva usually wins.
  • Consolidation. Below 12 CBM, LCL (shared container) is cheaper; above that, book a 20-ft box and fill it with a second style.
